Ever thought about getting a Siberian Husky?

The 22nd and 23rd January 2011 saw hundreds of people arrive at Aviemore in the Scottish Highlands for the 2011
Arden Grange
and Siberian Husky Club of Great Britain Aviemore Sled Dog Rally.

There were over 1000 sled dogs and 200 mushers attend the event which is sponsored by Arden Grange. The rally is run on forest trails around Loch Morlich in the shadow of the Cairngorms.

There is no age range for the (human) competitors and so they have some attend from eight years old right up to 60. It’s a great family even and attracted over 3000 spectators.

The rally sponsored by dog food manufacturer Arden Grange features teams of between two and eight sled dogs pulling sleds up to 25 miles an hour over a challenging four mile track.

Taking part in the 2011 event were Siberian Huskies, Alaskan Malamutes, Samoyeds and Canadian Eskimo dogs. The first rally took place in 1984 and had just a dozen teams racing. In 2011 there were over 200 teams racing which shows how popular the show is.

The teams come from all over with some travelling from the Isle of Wight. All the teams work hard all year and have to be in great condition ready for racing.

They are fed on high quality dog food such as

and the handlers train to ensure they are as fit as the dogs. At the venue there is always a vet on hand to make sure the dogs are fit and healthy and of course to see to an accidents that may happen.

Many of the dogs that compete at this venue will also be competing at Crufts later in the year at Birmingham’s NEC.
