Problem Dog Behavior: Be Careful! That Command May Be Loaded

Barking, chewing, pulling on the leash, jumping on people, these are just a few of the topics that fall under the heading “problem dog behavior”.  Although experienced dog owners are familiar with these and other common problems, it is important to understand why dogs exhibit these behaviors.  If you understand why a dog behaves in these ways, it is more likely that you won’t mishandle the situation.  You may be considering dog ownership, you may just be a new dog owner or you may just wish to better manage your dog’s behavior.  In any case, an understanding of problem behaviors is the best way of both solving and preventing them.

The first thing that you should know is that a tired dog is a good dog.  One of the most common causes of problem dog behavior is that they have too much energy.  If a dog gets enough exercise, he or she will be much less likely to exhibit undesirable behaviors.  Does that make sense?  Think of yourself, how do you feel after a good workout?  Are you tired?  What do you want to do?  Are you more likely to get a good nights sleep?.  The other advantage to making sure that your dog gets enough exercise is that you also will get more exercise.  Don’t forget, you have made a commitment to care for this animal, you must make sure that it gets enough exercise.

The most common problem dog behaviors are:
- Barking
- Chewing
-  Pulling On The Leash
- Ignoring Commands
- Improper or No House Training (Potty Training)

It is best to understand why your dog is behaving in these ways.  Barking for example, is one of a dog’s ways of communicating and a  dog has different reasons to communicate, some reasons could indicate serious problems.  Another example is chewing.  Chewing is another behavior that is natural to dogs, but chewing can become a problem if your dog causes destruction.  How about house breaking, or in other words potty training?  How does that affect your life?

These behaviors are natural to dogs and dogs have reasons for behaving in these ways, but problems can develop.  Learning why your dog is behaving in a particular way is a good start in determining if there is something that you can change or remove from The Dog‘s environment to help stop the unwanted behavior.   The basic thing to remember is that a dog will behave in a certain way for a reason and it is helpful to find that reason.  Also remember that a tired dog is a good dog.  Make sure that your dog gets enough exercise and make sure that you play with your dog often.   There is a great benefit to dealing with your dog’s problem behaviors, and that is that the relationship between you and your dog will be more fulfilling.

One of the biggest problems that professional dog trainers find is that people have attempted to train their own dogs without proper knowledge or direction.  Sometimes this results in inappropriate behaviors in the dog that must be “untrained”.  This is not to say that a person cannot teach their dog a simple thing like to sit, but when teaching some commands a person may inadvertently train the dog to associate an unwanted response as well.  This is why it is critical to learn from a professional.  Do you have to go to classes?  Not necessarily. Classes can be very good, but they are expensive and they take away some of the flexibility of your schedule.  In our busy world, it is sometimes better to work on your own schedule.   There are some excellent training systems that you can use.
